Memphis Tonight

Labeled since able to walk on two feet.
A mom who ran off, a dad likes to drink.
And my teachers and preachers would wait patiently
For each time I’d fail, then they’d tell me there see.

And so here we are, right where they said we’re gonna be.
But they’ve no idea about the man I believe I can be.
But it won’t happen here.
At least not for me.

So it’s Memphis tonight, then a bright early rise
A Greyhound to take me where no one will find
One single trace to recognize
This Arkansas boy for the rest of his life.
But it’s Memphis tonight.

There’s bright eyes and bright smiles at People’s on Beale.
The songs mixed with laughter can change how you feel.
And I’m worn and look older than my 18 years.
I walk to the bar, and I order a beer.

And so here we are, right where they said we’re gonna be.
But they’ve no idea about the man I think I outta be.
But it won’t happen here.
At least not for me.

So it’s Memphis tonight, then a bright early rise
A Greyhound to take me where no one will find
One single trace to recognize
This Arkansas boy for the rest of his life.
But it’s Memphis tonight.

No matter how far I run.
Each day is still gonna come
With its own reckoning
For my father’s son.

Well I’m flipping a quarter that’s in front of me.
A tip for the barmaid, but it’s my destiny.
And it’s heads up, and that means that I’m heading west.
I picture those mountains right there in my head.

And so here we are, these strangers and my father in me.
I hope that I’m strong. Cause I know what’s ahead for me.
There’s no secrets here.
At least not to me.

It’s Memphis tonight, then a bright early rise
A Greyhound to take me where no one will find
One single trace to recognize
This Arkansas boy for the rest of his life.
But it’s Memphis tonight.
